| Lanzarote is rarely charming and green, rather in wide sections wild and rugged. The reason for this is that until recently it suffered alot of volcanic activity. The latest large eruption was just in the 18th century and lasted for six years. The whole south western part of the island was made to a waste land and today forms the magnificent national park "Timanfaya" with the Montanas de Fuego (mountains of fire). |

| The sight seeing worth of this island was decisively shaped and influenced by the artist Cesar Manrique, who recently died, unfortunately. He unlocked the beauty of the island for tourism excellently, but still managed to display the typical landscape. He is also responsible for Spain's noteworthy construction law that allows houses to have only up to four floors. |

| On Lanzarote there are vivacious places, foremost the lively and very "spanish" capital Arrecife and the tourist center Puetro del Carmen, where food, lodging and entertainment are available. However, just a drive of a few minutes away from these genial spots one can experience Lanzarote in its original wilderness form. |

| Naturally the Sun lovers come onto this island and find it just right. In the south there's the beautiful sandy bays of the Papagayo Beaches and the "Playa Blanca" (White Beach). Broad beaches stretch out from Puerto del Carmen many kilometers northward and the black beach of the Saunas de Janubio is also recommended. |

| For the ambitious sport holiday makers there are many activities likewise: Deep-sea diving, surfing, tennis, horse-back riding, as well as cycling and kite flying. |
